Six: Corporal W. R. Hemmings, 16th/5th (The Queen's) Royal Lancers, Royal Armoured Corps, late Somerset Light Infantry

1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf; General Service 1962-2007, 2 clasps, Radfan, South Arabia (23238601 Cpl. W. R. I.), mounted as worn, sold together with three army red books and a corresponding miniature set, contact wear, edge bruising to last, overall very fine (6)

Walter Raymond Hemmings was born on 28 September 1918 and served in the Somerset Light Infantry with the Territorial Army but transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps before the Second World War on 26 April 1939. Re-enlisting with the Royal Armoured Corps on 21 April 1955, he was posted to the British Army of the Rhine on 31 July 1955.

Returning home on 6 January 1957 he was again discharged and re-enlisted on 4 July 1957, returning to the British Army of the Rhine on 4 September 1959 before joining the M.E.L.F. on 10 December 1964. Serving in Aden during this period he was awarded the Radfan and South Arabia clasps.

Hemmings returned home on 19 November 1964 and served one more tour with the British Army of the Rhine before returning to England for a final time on 19 January 1968. He was discharged as the result of the reduction of the establishment on 1 January 1969. His service was described as 'Exemplary' and his testimonial states:

'He has been with our band for the last thirteen years. He has been in charge of the music library. He is meticulous in his turn out and is very illustrious throughout and completely trustworthy. H e gets on well with everybody and is always willing to do any job that he is asked. He should be an asset to any firm which he joins.'
