Stephen Angelo O'Callaghan was born in October 1883 at Gondah, Fyzabad, Bengal and found lifelong employ in the Postal & Telegraph Service of the Indian Government. A member of the United Provinces Circle, during the Great War he served with the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force. He is recorded as the Assistant Director of Postal Services at Ruz, near the Diala River in Iraq. Following this, he went up onto the North-West Frontier in 1919. It is understood that he retired to England, for his wife died at Ditchling Common, Sussex in July 1980.
