Hugh Tome was a native of Barnston.
At the Battle of Chateauguay on 26 October 1813, an outnumbered force of British, Canadian, and native warriors - commanded by the renowned Lieutenant-Colonel Charles-Michel de Salaberry - defeated a superior force of American troops attempting to invade Lower Canada and attack Montreal.
The Battle of Crystler's Farm was fought on 11 November 1813 as part of the Saint Lawrence Campaign during the War of 1812. The Canadian Militia was part of the 800 British forces present for the Battle alongside British regular troops and aboriginal warriors. The British/Canadian forces were victorious despite being great outnumbered by the Americans, who numbered approximately 4000, with the victory successfully ending the American threat to Montreal.
