General Gordon's Star for the Siege of Khartoum 1884, good very fine

Designed by Gen. Gordon, and distributed by him to the Black troops under his Command in the Garrison of Khartoum, just previous to his assassination, 26 Jan. 1885. Taken from the body of a Black Soldier by Col. R. Kerr Bayly, C.B. 42nd Regt.

Richard Kerr Bayly was born at Southampton, Hampshire on 19 November 1838. He joined the 42nd Regiment of Foot in March 1855 taking the rank of Ensign (without purchase). He was posted to Malta between July and October 1855, by which time he had been promoted to Lieutenant. Bayly then served in Crimea from October 1855, returning home in July 1856. Bayly was next posted to India in August 1957 and fought during the Indian Rebellion, being wounded on the 9 December 1858 at Seria Ghat. He returned home in 1859.

Bayly served in India for a second period between 1863 and 1868, during which he was promoted to Captain. He fought in the Third Anglo-Ashanti War in 1873-1874, becoming Brevet Major in April 1874, and Major in September 1877. Bayly's final posting was to Malta, where he was stationed from October 1876. He became Lieutenant-Colonel in September 188, and commanded the 1st Battalion, The Black Watch from July 1885 until September 1888. Then, as Colonel, he was placed on the half-pay list. He retired in 1895 and died on Corfu, Greece on 6 March 1901. Bayly was made a Companion of the Order of Bath and also held the Order of Medjidjie, 3rd class and Order of Osmanieh, 4th class.
