The iconic Hermès Birkin was designed after English model and singer Jane Birkin accidentally spilled the contents of her bag onto the lap of Jean-Louis Dumas, then the artistic director of Hermès, while trying to stow her handbag in an overhead compartment on an Air France flight. Jane complained to Dumas that she could never find a bag large enough to hold all her belongings. Together, they sketched a design focused on functionality - without realizing it would later become the most sought-after handbag in fashion history.

Hermès artisans continue to use techniques developed over two centuries for crafting the finest saddles. Each Birkin and Kelly handbag is meticulously hand-stitched by a single expert craftsperson, taking up to 40 hours to complete one Birkin bag.
