79th Foot Order of Merit 1819, 2nd class, copper, for 7 years service, reverse with Scottish basket-hilt sword, unnamed as issued, lacking suspension, highlights polished, about very fine

Instituted in 1819, this medal could be awarded for conspicuous or meritorious conduct in the field as well as simply for long service. It was to be worn on the left breast upon a two-inch length of tartan riband, with the recipient's name entered in the regimental Book of Merit; should the recipient receive an award of the First Class after having received the Second, the latter was to be returned for re-issue. It was discontinued in 1838, with those already in possession of a medal and still serving at the time allowed to continue wearing it for the remainder of their time in uniform.
