The L.S. & G.C. awarded to Chief Petty Officer W. Lister, Royal Navy, who saw action at the Battle of the Falkland Islands with Bristol before going to Russia with Kildonan Castle during the Petrograd Mission in 1917

William Lister was born at Bovey Tracey, Devon on 2 April 1877 and enlisted with the Royal Navy on 28 March 1897 as Boy Class II. Stationed with H.M.S. Bristol as a Petty Officer upon the outbreak of the Great War seeing action with her at the Battle of the Falkland Islands which saw Admiral Von Spee's East Asia Squadron destroyed.

Lister was posted to Kildonan Castle in August 1916 and was still with her the next year when she took part in the Petrograd Mission. Embarking in January 1917 Lord Milner and a delegation of diplomats were transported to Russia in a last ditch effort to improve Russian Morale and solve issues of supply. This they were unable to accomplish and the Tsar was overthrown in the February Revolution the next month. Lister was demobilised in February 1920.
