D.C.M. London Gazette 3 June 1915, the original citation states:
'For gallant conduct and initiative at Richebourg St. Vaast on 16th March, 1915, in extricating nine horses under heavy shell fire.'
Thomas A. Tanser entered the war on 20 August 1914 with the 2nd Bridging Train, Royal Engineers, a unit which specialised in erecting pontoon bridges. In this role they played an important part in the Allied retreat to the Marne, moving ahead of the withdrawing armies and ensuring they kept moving at speed. After victory at the Marne and the Allied advance Tanser was attached to the newly arrived Lahore Division.
This unit saw heavy fighting through late 1914 and early 1915, notably Neuve Chappelle and Aubers Ridge. It was in the wake of this latter engagement that Tanser won his D.C.M. for bravery during a heavy bombardment. He survived to claim his award and continued to serve for the duration of the war.
