Operations Record Book entry for 9 April 1945:
F/Lt. Deane despatched 4 cars under F/Sgt. Farr to recce advanced site and new base for A.T.I., whilst he obtained particulars of burial of F/O. Simons at WALLENHORST.
F/O. Millar found that both the recce Unit and 12 Corps. H.Q. had moved. Two officers from 13 ACG. visited the party with the object of starting work on the airfield that afternoon. Lt.Col. Crabbe. was contacted and agreed 2805 (Rifle) Squadron should provide protection for the A.C.G. F/O. Millar than allotted one A.F.V. to accompany the A.L.G. officers and protect them, a second under F/Sgt. Hall to patrol parallel to the canal, whilst he took up a position to cover 2805 Squadron advancing to line the canal banks. At this juncture shots came from the opposite bank of the canal, in the direction of F/Sgt. hall's car, which proceeded opposite to where the shots had been fired. Here he was joined by F/O. Millar and they were informed that the Flight to their left had sustained casualties, but owing to gaps in the bank could not evacuate them. F/O. Millar immediately decided to evacuate them in his A.F.Vs. and proceeded to do this, F/Sgt. Hall picking up two wounded men and F/O. Millar a wounded officer, but the rest of the Flight were pinned down. The two cars made their way to a reasonably safe distance and transferred the casualties to a van which rushed them to hospital. Next F/O. Millar with the officers of the A.C.G. got all the construction personnel off the airfield, but he kept his troop there in support of 2805 Squadron, whose position was now becoming acute, as mortaring of their positions was intensifying. S/Ldr. Anderson O.C. 2805 Squadron said he wished to withdraw his Squadron and this was done by ferrying them on the A.F.Vs. F/O. Millar was then informed by F/Sgt. Hall there were two more casualties near where the others had been picked up, and the two cars proceeded there. They successfully evacuated the two wounded men and were informed by S/Ldr. Anderson that all members of his Squadron were now accounted for. The Troop then withdrew and Joined 13 A.C.G. No casualties in men or vehicles were sustained by F/O. Millar's Troop.
Hall is confirmed for the award in 'In Adversity' Exploits of Gallantry and Awards to the R.A.F. Regiment and its Associated Forces 1921-1995 by Squadron Leader N. G. Tucker, Royal Air Force.
