William Hedley was born on 4 March 1903 in Chirton, Tynemouth to John Hedley, a coal miner, and his wife Mary Ann Hedley. He was the second of five children and by the age of 15, he had lost his mother. By 18 years old he was working as a coal miner, along with his elder brother William - by 1921, his father was no longer a coal miner and instead working in the Social Club. On 6 September 1922 he enlisted to join the Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales' Own Yorkshire Regiment).
In the mid 1930s onwards, Hedley served in India. While stationed out in Bombay, he married Violet Emma Sussens on 22 October 1936. For his service out in India, Hedley was awarded the India General Service Medal with both clasps. Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, he returned home and suddenly died from coronary disease on 18 November 1940 and is buried at Melcombe Regis Cemetery, Grave 9.
