Jack Robert Ellis was born at Grays, Essex and enlisted there for the 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment and entered the war at some stage after 1916. Ellis was killed in action on 3 May 1917 when the Battalion was engaged in the Third Battle of the Scarpe. He is commemorated upon the Arras Memorial with his registry of effects listing his only next of kin as an 'Elizabeth Beard'; sold together with an illuminated memorial scroll and two postcard photographs of a soldier, one in uniform and one in civilian clothes, one of which has the name Mrs Bear[…] legible on the reverse.
