British War Medal 1914-20 (138 A.W.O.Cl.2. J. Smith. R.E.); Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (138 Cpl. J. Smith. R.E.), very fine (2)
James Smith was born in April 1875 near Winchester and by 1891 had been apprenticed as a whitesmith. Enlisting into the Royal Engineers at Sandown, Isle of Wight in June 1896, during the Great War he served at Hong Kong from November 1912-July 1919 with 40th Company. It seems likely he would have been tasked transporting munitions to the various gun batteries across the Colony. Having taken a single BWM and L.S. & G.C. Medal, he returned to Upper Brook Street, Winchester and died on 29 January 1940.
