Alfred Charles Bird, the son of Captain C.E. Bird, was a 22 year old engineer who had been born in Essex, England, living at Martin's Place, Sydney when the war began. He enlisted in the 19th Battalion at Sydney on 10 February 1915 as Corporal number 183. Embarking for France with the Battalion on 25 June 1915, he received a severe gunshot wound to the back in France on 3 August 1916.
Recovering from his wound he was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 1 May 1917 and posted to general reinforcements. Bird was unafraid of throwing himself back into the action even after his previous injury and was wounded a second time with a gunshot wound to the knee on 10 August 1918; sold together with copied research.
