A Great War Pair to Lieutenant C. H. S. Stephenson, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment who was wounded in the leg on 5 September 1918 as a result of shell fire and who was 'mentioned' on 28 December 1918

Charles Harold Simpson Stephenson was born on 22 August 1882, he was the son of The Reverend Robert Stephenson. He joined Mee & Co. of Retford, in 1907 as a solicitor. With the outbreak of the Great War, he joined the 3/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 25 November 1915 as Second Lieutenant and entered the war in France on 5 January 1917. He was promoted Lieutenant on 1 July 1917. Stephenson featured in the 8th Battalion History "We owe it to the untiring efforts of the signal section under Lieutenant Stephenson (Signalling Officer) that communications were kept up so well". He was wounded on 5 September 1918 when a 4.2" shell got a direct hit on the Battalion Headquarters every officer was wounded, Stephenson received a leg wound. He went on leave from 6 December 1918- 3 January 1919 and again between 22 January 1919 extended to 5 February 1919. He went to Clipstone Camp for Discharge on 8 February 1919. He returned to the legal profession after the war. He applied for his medals in 1921 and these were sent to Meed House, North Road, Retford, Nottinghamshire.
