Edward Llewellyn Oates was born on 12 January 1892, a native of Oatesdale Natal. He attested initially for the 1st Mounted Rifles on 31 August 1914 serving with them until 23 July 1915 when he joined 6th Squadron, South African Horse. Oates remained with this unit until 5 December 1916 when he was discharged.
Mobilised for service during the Second World War he was posted to Mombassa, Kenya on 24 July 1940 with the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Royal Natal Carabineers. Posted further north to the Suez on 16 June 1941 Oates served on the Desert until he began to suffer medical issues in August.
Returning to South Africa at the end of the year it was discovered that he was suffering from a brain tumour. Sadly this proved fatal and he died at Holfontein on 15 December 1942; sold together with copied service papers.
