John Butcher was born in November 1891 in Hertfordshire. He enlisted as a Second Lieutenant with the 53rd Welsh Division and disembarked at Gallipoli on 16 July 1915. Later that year he transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps and was promoted Lieutenant on 1 July 1917. According to his medal index card, Butcher served as a Lieutenant in the R.A.F. before he then transferred to his final regiment, the Herefordshire Regiment, by May 1920. He was awarded his Efficiency Decoration while serving as Captain in March 1929, before he was finally promoted to Major on 1 April 1930.
