William Laws was born at Gateshead, County Durham, on 5 January 1896 and was a plumber by trade. Laws enlisted into the Royal Marines on 16 June 1915 and first entered the war in Egypt on 27 October 1915, his Medal Index Card notes that he was originally issued with a 1914-15 Star by the Royal Engineers, however this was returned and reissued by the Admiralty. He was discharged to the Royal Engineers on 3 January 1917 and was discharged to the 'Z' Reserve on 13 March 1919. Laws however joined the Royal Air Force on 10 August 1920. Laws saw service in Iraq on two separate occasions in 1922 and 1924 and was briefly stationed at the H.Q. in Palestine in October 1924. He was discharged to the Reserves on 10 August 1927.
