Frederick Charles Hypolite Katon was born on 8 March 1888 and enlisted on 20 August 1915 and disembarked at Egypt with the Royal Engineers under the service number 1894. He was then attached to the R.A.F. as a 2nd Lieutenant with the new service number 528075. He then finished his war service with the Royal Army Service Corps, attached to the Royal Ulster Rifles. After the war, he transferred from the R.A.S.C. back to the Army Educational Corps and was gazetted as Lieutenant on 1 May 1921.
