Recommendation for the D.F.M.:
Has done 47 bombing raids with this Squadron over enemy territory. During fight with E.A. was wounded slightly in the arm and insisted on carrying on with his work. He with his pilot has shot down 1 enemy machine.
Arthur Edgar Powell was born at Holborn, London on 6 January 1892. He joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 12 January 1915 and served with No.7 Squadron. He was serving with No.218 Squadron Royal Air Force and on 5 July 1918 was involved in a Bomb raid on Bruges.
'E.A. came under our machine, and attacked one of our formation at about 200 yards range, it left that machine and came back again past us, Sergt Powell fired 60 rounds the first time and 30 the second time and I observed the Albatross going down in a spin. Sergt Powell secured hits on each occasion.'
However on 11 August 1918 he was wounded:
'When returning from raid at about 2030 three miles east of Nieuport Sergt Powell was hit in right arm by stray bullet from E.A. and slightly wounded. he has been examined by Medical officer and returned to duty.'
Sold with copied research showing details of his raids between June- September 1918 where serving as an Aerial Gunner was involved in numerous raids on Bruges Docks, Ostende Harbour etc.
