Herbert Thomas Stone was born on 22 February 1892 and worked as a casual labourer before he enlisted to join the 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards on 4 March 1913. Upon the outbreak of the Great War, the battalion were sent to the Western Front and Stone was wounded on 17 November 1914. His wounding was mentioned in the January edition of the Burbage Parish Magazine: 'I am asked to add the names of Herbert Stone, and Frank Mundy, both of the Coldstream Guards, and I'm sorry to say both wounded'. The incident likely took place during the First Battle of Ypres when the battalion were involved in defending Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke.
Stone was later discharged on 14 January 1916 for gunshot wounds to the right leg and foot and was further entitled to the Silver War Badge.
After the war, Stone appears on the National Register as a retired caretaker, aged 47, living in Pewsey, Wiltshire with his wife Emily Jane, aged 44. He later died on 7 June 1956 and his wife, Emily, claimed his Great War pension.
