Hubert Wilfred Evans was born in May 1903 and was baptised at Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire in October 1904. Enlisting into the Royal Welch Fusiliers in April 1921 at Wrexham, Evans was a coal miner by trade. He was clearly a skilled pugilist and took several prizes during his career, being discharged in April 1933.
