James Rea was born on 19 March 1876 and enlisted into the Royal Navy on 6 April 1903. His first ship was H.M.S. Highfligher which he boarded on 16 April 1907. He served throughout the First World War on H.M.S. St George and Britomart amongst other ships and continued to serve after the war. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 25 October 1923 and Lieutenant Commander on 25 October 1931. He died on 25 April 1949.
