Johannes Cornelius Anthonissen served as a Burgher with the Calvina Kommando during the Anglo-Boer War. Returning to service in Witwatersrand Rifles on 20 March 1913 he was mobilised with that unit on 19 August 1914 and the unit went into action in German South West Africa.
They were one of the first units to volunteer for overseas service and indeed Anthonissen was with them although the majority of men in this unit joined the 3rd or 7th Infantry rather than the 10th. Anthonissen was posted to the 4th South African Horse on 6 January 1916 and served with them until 1917 when he returned to the volunteers. This likely represents being demobilised as his medical records that same year note that he was being treated for malaria in Durban.
Advanced Company Sergeant Major on 29 July 1922 he continued to serve with them until 17 June 1929. At this stage Anthonissen was commissioned Lieutenant, he is noted as still serving in 1933 when he was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal.
