Thomas W. Tansley was born was Salford, Woburn, Bedfordshire and was originally a farm labourer. He attested into the Bedfordshire Regiment on 4 August 1885 and served at Home between 4 May 1885 - 26 April 1900. He served in South Africa between 27 April 1900 - 29 December 1901, before then serving back Home between 30 December 1901 - 3 May 1902 when he was discharged by then with the rank of Sergeant. Tansley served with the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment between 17 March 1904 - 31 March 1908 before he attested into the 5th Battalion on 1 April 1908. He served at Home between 1 April 1908 - 28 February 1915 and served in France between 1 March 1915 - 26 August 1915 before serving back at Home between 27 August 1915 - 11 June 1919 when he was discharged then as Regimental Sergeant Major. He is further entitled to a Silver War Badge (270721) but not confirmed on the roll for the 1935 Jubilee medal.
