A group of four Private J. W. Rains, Royal Army Medical Corps, late Derbyshire Regiment, who was captured at Boschbult farm on 31 March 1902 but was later released

John William Rains was born at Duffield, Derbyshire on 14 August 1883 and attested into the 4th Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, on 19 October 1900. Rains was captured by superior Boer forces on 31 March 1902 when the Damant's Horse, part of Lt-Col G. A. Cookson's column, whilst reconnoitring along the Brak Spruit, came into contact with a convoy of Burghers under the command of Assistant Commandant-General J. H. de la Rey at Boschpan and followed it onto Bocshbult farm. The farm is located 20km south-east of Delareyville. Rains was later released. He served at Peking after the Boer War and extended his service for a total of 8 years on 1 April 1904. Rains later transferred to the Army Reserve on 18 October 1908. He re-engaged in the Reserve on 18 October 1912 and by now was with the Royal Army Medical Corps. Rains rejoined the Army this time the Royal Army Medical Corps and entered the war in France on 18 August 1914 serving with 7/7th Ambulance. He was discharged in March 1919.
