(x) Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Pte C. Conroy. 12th Lans); Turkish Crimea 1855, unnamed as issued, about very fine, (2)

Charles Conroy was born in Salford and attested to join the 17th Royal Lancers at Dublin on 1st March 1849. He served with them for two years before transferring to the 12th Lancers on 1 June 1851. Conroy subsequently served in the Crimean War at the Battle of Balaklava when the 12th Lancers reinforced the Light Cavalry Brigade after the initial charge. In addition to his one year in the Crimea, he also served in the Cape of Good Hope for two years and India for four years. On 15 April 1861, Conroy was recorded as medically unfit for further service due to pulmonary consumption at an advanced stage. He was 29 years of age.
