(x) Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 6 clasps, Belmont, Modder River, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast (7043 Pte W. J. Cousins, Gren: Gds:), very fine
William John Cousins was born circa 1880 in Ballinderry, Autumn and worked as a labourer before he enlisted into the 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards on the 30 October 1898 at Belfast. He served at home between 30 October 1897 and 22 September 1899 and then spent a month in Gibraltar between September -October 1899. Afterwards, he transferred to South Africa, where he served from October 1899 - October 1902. He then spent the remainder of his military service stationed at home.
Cousins then enlisted into the Army Reserve on the 30 October 1903; he served five years before being discharged on 29 October 1909. He was further entitled to the King's South Africa Medal with both clasps.
