The Queen's South Africa Medal awarded to Gunner A. Stubbs, who was killed in action at Farquhar's Farm on 30 October 1899

Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Natal (94806 Gnr: A. Stubbs. 42nd Bty: R.F.A.), the obverse somewhat polished, slight edge bruise, very fine

Arthur Stubbs was born at Denton, Manchester in 1874 and attested at Seaforth on 21 December 1892. He served in Britain until being posted to India on 28 February 1896 with 29th Battery R.F.A. where he served for several years.

Joining the 42nd Battery on 1 September 1899, he arrived with them in South Africa on 21 September and was still there when the Anglo-Boer War began. He was not part of the battery's compliment at Elandslaagte however when they withdrew back to Ladysmith, he did join them in advancing towards the Boers before the city at Nicholson's Nek and Farquhar's Farm on 29 October.

One British force was encircled and wiped out at Nicholson's Nek after a misdirected night march. The rest of the British attempted to advance but poor co-ordination of their part combined with the speed of Boer manoeuvres and the surprise of facing modern artillery saw them forced back.

Stubbs was killed during this engagement, his service papers noting he died in the Battle of at Farquhar's Farm on 30 October 1899; sold together with copied paperwork.
