The Indian General Service Medal awarded to Private W. Roberts, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who died in service in 1891

India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Burma 1885-7 (706 Pte W. Roberts. 1st Bn. R. W:Fus.), contact mark to obverse, very fine

William Roberts enlisted with the Royal Wesh Fusiliers on 19 May 1884 and embarked for India on 15 December 1885. He saw service in the Third Burma War, where the Regiment formed part of the 3rd Infantry Brigade, launching a seaborne invasion of Mandalay via the River Irrawaddy. The invasion was a success with limited resistance however the Battalion was needed in the country for some time afterwards, suppressing continuous armed resistance. Roberts is listed as dead upon the roll with his medal issued to Mary Roberts of Ty Capel, Denbigh. Notably a newspaper article in the Wrexham Advertiser in September 1891 requests applications 'from persons supposing themselves entitled as next of kin…'. This article lists a Private William Roberts, 1st R.W.F. although it should be noted two men of the same name are listed as deceased upon the same medal roll; sold together with copied research.
