(x) Gwalior Star 1843, Maharajpoor centre (John Redmond 2nd Troop 3rd Brigade Royal Artily E.I.C.S.), original loop suspension replaced with silver straight bar suspension, very fine

John Redmond saw action with the 2nd Troop, 2nd Brigade on the 29 December 1843 at Maharajpoor with the Royal Artillery. The battle was bloody, with soldiers at times engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and while the British eventually defeated the Scindia forces, the price was heavy, with 979 men killed, including General Churchill and top officers, with thousands more men wounded. The bronze star made to commemorate this battle was made from guns captured during the Gwalior campaign.
