China 1842 (John Lovick, 98th Regiment Foot.), ex-brooch mounted, suspension re-affixed, thus fine
Provenance:
Glendinings, June 1988.
John Lovick was born in 1820, probably in Norfolk, and enlisted into the 98th Regiment of Foot in January 1838. Lovick sailed to the Far East with his unit in 1841 and they shared in the events at Chinkiang and the advance to Nanking in 1842. He was to be regularly sick and spent time aboard the H.M.S. Belleisle and Coromandel in 1843 and at Hong Kong. He died there on 30 December 1844 and is likely buried in the Happy Valley Cemetery, although there is no grave to his memory; sold together with copied research.
