Joseph Downey was born on 12 September 1912 and served with the 1st Battalion, Shropshire Light Infantry during the Second World War. His unit was posted to North Africa as part of the Expeditionary Force, and at some stage he was stationed in Italy. There, Downey was listed as missing from 14 April 1943, later being reported as a Prisoner of War in Italy. He survived his captivity and was transferred to Class A Army Reserve on 6 November 1945 and to Class Z on 26 January 1946. He was discharged on 3 September 1946 and the next day re-enlisted for a three year short service regular engagement; sold together with copied research.
