The Army L.S. & G.C. Medal awarded to Private A. Muggeridge, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, a pre-War Regular who was wounded in action on 31 October 1914 with the 2nd Battalion; returned to the 1st Battalion, he was again wounded and taken a Prisoner of War in the costly attack on 23 April 1917

Arthur Muggeridge was born at Southwater on New Years' Day 1881 and enlisted into The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment in August 1900. He served in France with the 2nd Battalion from 4 October 1914. The Battalion were thrown into the actions of the First Battle of Ypres and around Ghulevelt. They stood firm but suffered dreadful casualties along the way, Muggeridge himself suffering a gunshot wound to the right foot on 31 October 1914.

Having recovered his wounds, he was then transferred to the 1st Battalion. By 23 April 1917, his unit were tasked to make a great attack on the Hindenburg Line. It was to be a costly day, 5 Officers killed & wounded, a further 9 missing. The other ranks lost 26 killed, 101 wounded and 308 missing. Muggeridge was serving with 'D' Company and had an arm broken by a bullet wound, before being taken a Prisoner of War.
