Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (Staff Serjt Of Pensioners Thos Smith Staff), light contact marks otherwise very fine

Thomas Smith was born at Main, Westmeath, Ireland, and enlisted into the 31st Foot at Monaghan on 15 January 1826. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 January 1829 and to Sergeant on 26 November 1834. Smith was married to Catherine McNamara on 24 October 1836 at Dinapore, India. He completed his service on 14 October 1847 as he was considered unfit for further service as a result of length of service and Climate and Chronic Rheumatism which he had got as a result of over 19 years overseas service in India. Smith was discharged at Chatham on 14 January 1848. He appears on the Staff List Enniskillen and was issued his Long Service Medal on 9 April 1868 and was to eventually settle in Woolwich, South London. Likely to be entitled to a Candahar Ghuznee Cabul Medal 1842 with Candahar reverse.
