Volunteer Decoration, V.R., with integral top riband bar, the reverse engraved 'Captain & Hon Major John Nelson 1st V.B. The Black Watch (R. Highrs) 14th Jany. 1893' silver and silver-gilt, hallmarked for London 1892, nearly extremely fine

John Nelson was commissioned Lieutenant on 29 April 1876, advanced Captain on 14 March 1891 and served as Honorary Major of the 1st (Dundee) Volunteer Battalion, Black Watch. He resigned his commission with permission to retain his rank on 22 July 1905. The 1st (Dundee) Volunteer Battalion, The Black Watch was formed as the 1st Forfarshire (Dundee) Rifles in 1859 before being attached to The Black Watch in 1881; sold together with copied research.
