M.M. London Gazette 9 July 1917.
William Hawksby was born at Manchester on 1 December 1892 and at some stage emigrated to Canada, serving in the 28th Regiment and the Hardwick Territorials prior to the outbreak of the Great War. Working at St. Thomas, Ontario when the War began he enlisted at London Camp on 28 November 1914 he was posted to the 18th Battalion and entered the war in France on 14 September 1915.
Advanced Lance-Corporal on 4 October 1916 he continued to serve, doubtless seeing action with the rest of the Regiment at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917. Specialising as a Signaller Hawksby Joined Canadian Corps of Signalling School as Instructor on 14 July 1917. Unfortunately he began to suffer from poor health, likely the result of a bout of Influenza which saw him applying for a pension when the war ended, he was discharged on 5 April 1919; sold together with copied research.
