Robert Warren entered the war in France on 25 March 1915 with the 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He likely served with them until the next year at the earliest before transferring to the Royal Engineers as a Sapper.
Posted to the 173rd Tunnelling Company Warren was serving with them when he was awarded the Military Medal, likely in late 1916-early 1917. In late 1917 this Company was stationed at Loos before transferring to Arras were they took part laying the groundwork for attacks at Messines and Vimy Ridge. Surviving the war, he was discharged upon the end of the conflict; sold together with copied research papers.
