A Great War 1918 D.C.M. awarded to Private F. Hewson, Lancashire Fusiliers
Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (241517 Pte. F. Hewson. 1/5 Lanc: Fus:), light edge wear with a minor edge knock, very fine
D.C.M. London Gazette 5 December 1918, the original citation states:
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when his platoon encountered strong opposition from an enemy post. After all three section commanders had been wounded he took command of the double Lewis-gun section, and, working forward, succeeded in capturing the position and twenty prisoners. He carried on his good work until after the objective was captured, and throughout the operation his courage, initiative and good leadership were most marked.'
Frank Hewson, a native of Todmorden, West Yorkshire, originally served with the 1/6th Lancashire Fusiliers under number 11116, later transferring to the 1/5th with the new number 241517. He was awarded his D.C.M. for conspicuous gallantry whilst facing the enemy, for which he was gazetted on 5 December 1918. Hewson is further entitled to a British War and Victory Medal pair; sold together with copied research.
