D.S.C. London Gazette 5 October 1918:
'For services in minesweeping operations between 1 January and 30 June 1918.'
Henry James Chapman was commissioned as a Temporary Sub. Lieutenant in February 1915 and joined the armed merchant cruiser H.M.S. Alsatian 'for duty with prize crews' in the following month.
But he was destined to serve out the war on minesweeping duties, commencing with his appointment to the Gossamer in July 1915 and followed by his command of the Croome from August 1917 until October 1919, in which period he was awarded the D.S.C. A final notation on his service record states that he was given special leave to sit for the Board of Trade's Master's Certificate and that he was demobilised in January 1920.
