Charles David Matzen was born on 5 September 1933 at Birkenhead. He served in the Korean War and was then one of the few Signalmen to share in the Arabian Peninsula campaign. Married in January 1956 in Ploughley, Oxfordshire, he died in October 2000 at Wantage, Berkshire.
