Thomas Maxwell Sharples was born at Preston, Lancashire, England on 27 November 1946. Emigrating to Australia he was an insurance underwriter when he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy at Adelaide on 9 March 1964 and posted to HMAS Cerberus for training before being posted to Penguin as an Ordinary Seaman Writer. Advanced to Writer on 22 February 1966 he went AWOL for 7 days on 31 January 1967 and on his return posted to Vendetta. Despite temporarily absconding in 1967, he was advanced to Leading Writer on 28 February 1969 and on 5 June 1972 he was posted to Sydney and service in Vietnamese waters. Thomas was discharged on 8 March 1973; sold together with copied research.
