Arthur James Hawkes was born at Hobart, Tasmania on 29 June 1924. A carpenter, he initially enlisted in the Army on 17 July 1942 before transferring to the Royal Australian Navy on 7 June 1943 as an Able Seaman. He was home based for the duration of the war and discharged on 16 April 1946; sold together with copied research.
