Hedley Francis Shepherd was serving as a Flying Officer in 1945 when he was forced to relinquish his commission due to ill-health. Returning to service after the war with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve he returned to the rank of Flying Officer on 4 January 1949. Re-joining the Royal Air Force itself on 21 April 1967, he was appointed Flying Officer (Master Pilot).
Promoted Flight Lieutenant on 21 April 1970, it was four years later that he was awarded the Queen's Commendation during her Birthday Honours. Shepherd retired, retaining his rank on 20 April 1977; sold together with copied London Gazette extracts.
