John Gordon Seale was born on 23 November 1913 in Quebec, Canada and before enlisting he worked as an Insurance Agent. Before joining the war, he had previously worked with the Mississauga Horse, 2nd Regiment between 1934-37, as well as becoming a qualified Machine Gunner in 1937. He embarked on 3 June 1941 as a 2nd Lieutenant and served with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Armoured Corps in the Second World War. Throughout the war he struggled with ill health, suffering with impetigo in June 1941, 'nerves' from January 1945 and appendicitis in April 1945. On 19 February 1949, he was mentioned in the Canadian Gazette to have been promoted from Captain to Major on 5 September 1945. He was discharged from active service on 31 July 1945, but he continued to serve as a reserve in the Governor-General's Horse Guards and was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration on 14 April 1958.
