Robert Shaw was born on 9 May 1926 and enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers for service during the Second World War. He later served with the Regiment in Palestine transferring to the Cameronians for service during the Malayan Emergency where he died on 30 October 1951.

A tribute by fellow Cameronian Eddie Clark appeared in the Covenanter, Vol LV, number 7, 2008, which states:

'In 1950 I was a member of C Company stationed on the Craigielea Rubber Estate near the town of Muar, Malaya. From this location, our company sent out patrols in search of bandits, or terrorists as they are known today. I was then a young section commander in charge of a section I have always regarded as one of the finest in the British Army. The section was part of eight platoon which at that time was commanded by Sgt Danny Brown who proved to be a first-class platoon commander. The object of this article is simply to pay tribute to three young men who died on operations whilst serving members of my section. They were:
Rfn Thomas Holland,
Rfn James Vallance,
Rfn Robert Shaw

Bob Shaw came from Manchester and was the oldest member of the section. Bob had seen action in North West Europe in the latter part of the Second World War. He was a quietly spoken reserved man. I would say he was very much a loner but he had a canny sense of humour and was very well liked in the platoon. On occasions, I would sit-down and have a chat with Bob and I always felt that deep down there had been some sadness in his life which he never wanted to talk about.'
