Four: Lieutenant-Commander H. R. Hopkins, Royal Navy, who served with the Coastal Forces during the Second World War
1939-1945 Star; France and Germany Star; War Medal 1939-45; Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Malaya, E.II.R. (Lieut. H. R. Hopkins. R.N.), good very fine (4)
Harold Robert Hopkins was commissioned as Midshipman in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 7 January 1944 and became Sub-Lieutenant on 10 June 1945. He joined H.M.S. Attack, the Coastal Forces base at Portland, in August 1944 and continued to serve at that Base until 1946 when he was granted a permanent commission on the Supplementary List of the Royal Navy. Given his award of the France & Germany Star, Hopkins clearly saw some action in the 'Spitfires of the Sea'. These light craft shared in plenty of service off the coasts of North-West Europe, either in engaging the enemy or the arduous - and highly dangerous - task of clearing the plethora of minefields which lay in wait for the Allied forces.
Having joined the Pickle in April 1951, Hopkins would have been present for the Coronation Review in June 1953. Posted to Terror, the Depot Ship at Singapore in December 1953, Hopkins saw further active service on or off the shores of Malaya (Medal & clasp) and was promoted Lieutenant Commander (Emergency) in June 1955; sold together with copied research.
