Henry Miller Melvin was born at Lanark, Glasgow on 1 June 1901 and educated at Victoria Road School. A waiter, he enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd class on 17 September 1918 spending the last few months of the Great War aboard HMS Powerful. Between the wars he served in a variety of vessels including Rodney, Hastings, Wellington and Edinburgh and at the beginning of the Second World War, he was serving on Edinburgh as Stoker Petty Office until 15 October 1940 when he was posted to Drake II. His service papers, make no reference to any further vessels beyond 4 June 1941 with Henry being released from service on 23 November 1945.
His Long Service and Good Conduct medal was awarded in September 1934. He also received the Jubilee 1935 medal as Chief Stoker aboard the HMS Victoria and Albert during the 1935 Coronation Review. Henry died at Auckland, New Zealand on 1 October 1959.
