Hubert John Grove was born at Droitwich, Worcestershire in 1886, enlisting with the Shropshire Yeomanry on 1 April 1907. Serving with 1 Shropshire Yeomanry on the outbreak of the Great War he was posted with them to Egypt where the unit served on the Suez Canal Defences.

They were amalgamated with the 10th (Shropshire & Cheshire Yeomanry) Battalion, Shropshire Light Infantry on 2 March 1917 and Grove went with them. They saw action at both Second and Third Battles of Gaza, the capture of Jerusalem and the Battle of Tel Azur, at which Harold Whitfield earned the Victoria Cross.

They transferred from Palestine to France in April 1918, seeing action during the Hundred Days Offensive. Grove survived the war and was discharged on 10 December 1918, he lived until the summer of 1954; sold together with copied research.
