Richard Willett was born in 1897, the son of Reverand Richard Wright Willett and Mary Willett of Norden Vicarage, Rochdale. He worked at the Union Bank of Manchester Ltd., Rochdale and joined the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps shortly after the war started, being commissioned on 27 December 1915.

Posted first to the 6th Battalion (Territorial Force), Lancashire Fusiliers he was serving attached to the 112th Trench Mortar Battery in July 1917. Willett was killed in action on 31 July 1917 and his commemorated upon the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. An inscription Oak Panel was presented to St. Paul's Church, Norden, by his father, the inscription states:

'To the glory of God and the memory of Second Lieut. Richard Willett 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, attached to the 112th Trench Mortar Battery, aged 20 years, who fell near Messines, Flanders. July 31st, 1917, in the service of his country.'
