Three: Private T. Davies, Shropshire Light Infantry, who died at home on 12 October 1917 due to sickness

1914-15 Star (14506 Pte. T. Davies. Shrops. L.I.); British War and Victory Medals (14506 Pte. T. Davies. Shrops. L.I.), together with a Silver War Badge, no. 504319, good very fine (3)

Thomas Davies was born on 15 December 1895 in Gobowen, Shropshire where he lived and worked as a gardener and groom prior to attesting with the Shropshire Light Infantry for Great War service on 15 September 1914. Posted to the 7th Battalion, he and his unit disembarked for overseas service in France the next year on 27 September 1915. Davies' time in the service was marked by ill-health, with his medical record showing he suffered at various times from gonorrhoea, laryngitis, bronchitis and, finally, nephritis. He is recorded as being 'dangerously ill' with nephritis in June 1916 and was invalided home to England. His condition was found to be permanent and a result of active service, and Davies was discharged no longer physically fit for duty on 8 June 1917. He died just a few months later on 12 October and was buried at Whittington Cemetery, aged just 22 years old; sold together with copied research.
